For Shauna Darcy, her adorable pet Ruby not only enhanced her existence, but also served as her savior. Darcy was grappling with mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and agoraphobia, and she hoped that a service dog might be able to aid her. Ruby seemed to understand her role from the outset and swiftly transformed into a devoted partner for Darcy. Unbeknownst to them, Ruby’s fondness for her new owner would eventually rescue Darcy from life-threatening situations.
During her training to become a service dog, Ruby became concerned about something that caught her attention. Darcy, her trainer, mentioned that Ruby started sensing a change in her heart rate and reacted in peculiar ways such as pawing at her, trying to get her attention, or even getting on top of her. Darcy shared this information in an interview with The Dodo.
Upon hearing Ruby express her concerns, Darcy knew it was vital to take action and seek professional medical help. During the appointment, the doctor disclosed that Shauna had been diagnosed with vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a rare heart disease that poses a severe threat to one’s life. Although Ruby had already made a significant impact on Darcy’s life, her influence was far from over.
Ruby’s training has now been adjusted to center around her mother’s heart problems. Ruby assists her mother in obtaining her medicines and keeping track of her heart rate. Recently, Ruby began warning Darcy when something was gravely wrong. Although Darcy was feeling alright, she placed her faith in Ruby and called for an ambulance. This choice might have been the tipping point between life and death. Darcy arrived at the hospital barely conscious and in agony because her heart had gone into atrial fibrillation – a heart condition that causes an abnormal increase in heart rate.
As the medical professionals tended to Darcy, her loyal furry friend Ruby remained steadfastly by her side. Even during the moments when Darcy was rendered unconscious, Ruby would snuggle up next to her in the hospital bed, providing a much-needed source of comfort and affection. Darcy recognizes just how fortunate she is to have such an incredible companion in her life, and is immensely grateful for Ruby’s unwavering love and support. She takes solace in the knowledge that Ruby will always be there for her, keeping her secure and protected no matter what challenges may come their way.
